Internet Predators - Why They Are Real Threat

Whenever I heard about Internet predators, I thought that its unrealistic, or mere propaganda, but a recent survey opened my eyes. This survey was conducted among 1,501 kids between the ages of 10 and 17 and concluded:

  • One in 33 kids had been asked by someone to meet them somewhere, or called them, or sent them regular mail, money or gifts.
  • 22% of targets for online predators were between the ages of 10 and 13.
  • At any time, there are 50,000 sexual predators online.
  • Around 1 in 4 had an unwanted exposure to some kind of image of naked people or people having sex in the last year.
  • Around 1 in 5 kids had received a sexual solicitation.

Internet predators are very smart and are capable to dig out most of the vital information about their target. They do this by becoming their friends while chatting online, visiting target's blogs or to other social networking sites such as facebook or myspace. You may be surprised how much personal information a child can post which can range from their name to their address, school, age etc... If you do not trust me go to any social networking sites and look at yourself.

I am strong advocate of teaching children and internet users on internet threats and how to use internet safely, but I have also learned that children has their own unique way of interpreting facts, and what seems to us as obvious internet threat, but to them it may not. It is essential to teach children not to give heir personal information ever on the internet but one should not rely on teaching solely, internet predators are very smart, and can trick children to pass on their personal information, and that is why regulating the internet is so important.

Regulation is be done by a parental control software. True parental control software not only blocks adult content, block websites such as porn sites while our children is on internet, but also monitors and track children's internet usage, record chats and instant messaging and read emails and make you aware when internet predator makes an advancement towards children.
